We encourage families to access the services described below in order to begin the process of transition between the caregiver and PLAN of North Texas.

PLAN of North Texas provides the following services on a reimbursable basis.

  1. Case Management: Skilled social workers help clients manage their daily lives: to make financial decisions; to locate housing; to go with a client to a doctor?s appointment; to develop a budget; to act as Representative Payee for Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income payments, etc. In a psychiatric crisis, social workers will assist the client to get appropriate care.
     
  2. Counseling: Licensed social workers, through psychotherapy counseling, assist many clients solve problems and dispel worries.
     
  3. Respite Care: If a caregiver has to be absent for hospitalization, a vacation or some other reason,PLAN can arrange for a social worker to stay in touch with the client, allay fears, and assist with some of the needs that the caregiver usually provides.


    Membership in PLAN entitles clients to attend the following:

     
  4. Social Skills Training: To encourage the development of social skills and to enhance and broaden friendships among adults with mental illness, PLAN of North Texas has an organized social program. The Social Skills Training schedule includes the Walking Club, Cooking Club, Supper club, Tai Chi instruction, arts & crafts, Explore Dallas excursions, monthly birthday parties, family picnic, music fest and a variety of theme parties. A weekly writer?s group produces a quarterly publication of their art, photography, stories, poems and essays.
     
  5. Education Program: This program emphasizes understanding and coping with a mental illness in the family as it applies to the participants.

    "Rebalancing My Life" is an eight week course for adults with mental illness that helps them understand their illness and how to live with it.

    The "Family Education Course" helps family members understand the illnesses and offers suggestions to family members on how to help their relative. Both courses are offered twice per year.

    A "Stress Management" course is offered weekly as is a course on "Computer Usage"?.
